Ambient Assisted Living – What is it ??

Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) is a term used to describe unobtrusive monitoring and support for elderly people to allow them to live as independently as possible. These days, the right technology can be individually adapted and customised to support individuals with the everyday tasks that they might need help with.

Retirement Apartments, Flats or Residential Care can be equipped with this building automation technology. Falls and/or unusual behaviour are intelligently identified through a range of sensor and reported to the management team – allowing them to act if necessary.

The use of automation technology, not only gives the residency a better quality of life it also relieves the carers of many of their daily tasks – allowing them to focus on the more important areas of their jobs.

Features & Benefits

Some of the main features and benefits of using this system are:

  • Fall Detection – Using several types of sensors available, presence can be monitored ensuring “usual” movement. When no activity is detected in a certain time parameter, an alarm or call can be made to alert assistance.
  • Emergency Button – A wireless Button can be used to send an alarm to alert someone to attend, whether a carer, relative or both. A wrist worn button can also be used, adding greater flexibility in case a fall stop someone from getting to a location where the button is mounted.
  • Emergency Access – In an emergency such as the emergency button is pressed, not only are people alerted to attend but the door can also be unlocked straight away allowing quicker entry and attendance.
  • Electrical Safety – Specific electrical items can be monitored and if being left on for longer than is usual or necessary, they can be set to switch off, just in case!
  • Reminders – If this is system is combined with the multi-room audio system then reminders can be played at certain times of the day to ensure those common tasks get done, whether its being reminded to take medication or putting the correct rubbish bin out.

Other Assisted Living Examples

Assisted living is not just for the elderly, but can be used for a wide variety of applications such as those with disabilities to improve their lives, and hopefully add more freedom to everyday life.
